Establishment of Paediatric Infectious Diseases Society

The continued infections in young lives in Nigeria spurred the inspiration for establishing a society with a mission to play a key role in combating childhood infectious diseases in the country and West African sub-region. The society came into existence in December 1999, then known as the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Society, Nigeria (PIDSN). Several meetings and local conferences were held over the years and members participated actively with scientific and invited paper presentations on topical childhood infectious disease issues in the biennial World Society for paediatric Infectious Diseases (WSPID) congresses. The society, then still designated as “PIDSN” organised its first International Symposium on “The Prevailing Infectious Diseases in Nigeria” at the 6th WSPID congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina in November 2009. By so doing, Nigeria did Africa proud, being the first time, any African country had organised a session at the world congress. The current name of the society, the Nigerian Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (NISPID), was adopted by the Society’s congress in January 2010 during the Annual Paediatric Association of Nigeria Conference in Ilorin to align with the nomenclature of the world society. NISPID was registered as a corporate entity with the Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission in May 2011.
